Kuinka minusta tuli musiikkitoimittaja, osa 2 – Piikkiporaajasta kaatopaikalle

Suuri löytöretkeni oikeiden töiden tutkimattomaan maailmaan päättyi vain pari viikkoa alkamisensa jälkeen. Kuten jokainen itseään kunnioittava jänishousu, päätin sen tekstarilla.

It's time again to take a time out from social med It's time again to take a time out from social media. Not that I've been particularly active here anyway, but since I have people following me and receive numerous DMs, I feel like I owe an explanation.

Here's why: Though there were big positives, too, this year has certainly been one of the shittiest, most draining, and messed up. There are many reasons, and I won't go into details, but social media played a significant role in this downfall. Like the guy in the picture, scrolling your feed forces you to look at your life through a window.

Reflections of reality, social posing, commercials, people selling their nonsense or themselves, catfishers, and lots and lots of chaos and scandals. Imagine eating that stuff for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and your stomach cramps would do you in in less than a year. The brain can't stomach bad nutrition any better, it just doesn't warn you about it as the creepy color in your potty does.

I hope I can get back to being myself soon enough, start making YouTube videos again, and enjoy life without the ensuing chaos. And the people igniting it. I feel so much better without it, and this year was a brutal reminder of the fact.

So, I'll recover for a few months. I won't check the messages, tags, or anything else during my fast. If you have something important I need to know, you can email me (link in bio, on my homepage, where you'll find it).

Should you "push the disc with the offside shoulde Should you "push the disc with the offside shoulder"?

Hmmm. Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, but to me, the word pushing means applying outside force to move an object. If that's true, the shoulder pushing the disc should move faster than the disc (or the hand) to make the disc move. Which clearly is not the case. The arm has to move faster than the shoulder following it.

This is why I don't teach rotating the torso, but swinging the arm. The hand should be the fastest part of your body, period.

That doesn't mean the offside shoulder should be stationary. On the contrary! It can and should move with the disc, but only as a follow-through. The offside rotation is essential, no doubt about that! But the arm should always go first.

If you fail to follow through with the offside shoulder, you'll likely tip over the front leg and lose balance.

So yes: rotate the torso, but only as follow-through, not as the initial pushing motion to make the disc move.

Anyway, people always ask for videos of me throwing. I guess I need to convince them with my form.

Here's a super relaxed 460 feet (140m) hyzer on Munkkiniemi hole 7. I try to throw like I teach, but I also teach things that I'm incapable of doing, but I believe you can do better. That is called teaching.

Somehow, I haven't lost much of my distance lately Somehow, I haven't lost much of my distance lately. I still have the easy 500 in me, and it's even gotten easier with what I know. I also notice that I could still hold on with them in an open field, even if I'm considerably slower and clumsier than most of today's young players. I guess I'm compensating for my lack of speed with something equally important.

I never learned maximum distance lines, and always fell short of the impressive lengths, but for a master's-aged recreational player with a bad hip, I'm pretty satisfied with my golflines nowadays.

Always
Be
Coiling

People think they are coiled when they swing the disc back, but to properly coil and create the necessary tension between the hips and the shoulders, you need to PLANT firmly while coiled. Then you uncoil when you push the leg down and swing the arm forward.

If you uncoil unbraced, you only swing the body in the air. It feels good, but does absolutely nothing to gain power.

So: turn the shoulders while you stride. Turn them properly. As your front foot touches the ground, keep on turning, because if you don't, you uncoil too early. Step on the ground HARD, HARDER. YES, EVEN HARDER.

And throw.

At first it's going to feel like you're too late, but you're not. You need to belate the throw out to give time for the front leg to brace properly. You will notice the difference when you get the timing right.

Good luck!

I repeat what I've said many times before because I repeat what I've said many times before because it's so important it deserves to be repeated:

1. To throw efficiently, the body has to slam onto the front leg as fast as possible.
2. To do that, we cannot sway the upper body to get there. We need to be there.
3. That's why we need to keep the body weight, i.e., the head closer to the front leg than the back leg.
4. After that, it's mostly about how fast you accelerate the arm.

Mind your head, keep the back leg as light as possible.

Not gonna lie; it's that time of the year when the Not gonna lie; it's that time of the year when the most challenging part of living is to find the motivation to actually do something instead of thinking about it. But I'm blaming not only the dark, cold, wet season since those are only catalysts for deeper inspection, but the fact that one more year is coming to a close means one more year passed without any significant strides for the better. Yet again.

For some time now, I've tried to run from the disappointment of being unable to play the game I loved so much and gave everything to for over two decades. It started with occasional yips, which felt like someone yanking your arm the last millisecond before the release. It's a weird feeling when you know "you" didn't do it, but some external force you can't explain. If you've seen Eveliina's worst struggles at the basket, you know what I'm talking about. Over the years, it has infected my approaches and drives, too. It's a real bummer, I tell ya. So much so that after all kinds of useless treatments and therapies for over 10 years, I decided to give up the struggle and leave the sport for others to enjoy.

Then, a year ago, after being in constant back pain for months, I decided to take an MRI to find the cause and hoped to find a solution, too. Turns out I have osteoarthritis, the exact condition Chris Dickerson announced to have earlier this season. Okay, so I now know why my left leg doesn't move when I tell it to, but also that there is very little I can do about it. I can only slow down the inevitable deterioration and the need for hip surgery but not really improve the condition. So, that's a bummer, too. Not only is my mental game in ruins, but my body decided to tag along, too. And it's starting to show in my form, which has become even blockier and stiffer than ever. At fucking 38.

So... yeah... this year has been a struggle with the disc golf side of things. Do you have any tips to find a reason to throw plastic next year?

To reach out properly, or like Albert Tamm, we nee To reach out properly, or like Albert Tamm, we need to create a "stretch in the chest" by pushing it forward while letting the arm get pushed out. This is how we avoid rounding, which is the worst enemy of a clean, smooth, powerful backhand shot.

Despite having quite severe hip and back problems Despite having quite severe hip and back problems lately, I could crank out a 510 footer with no wind to speak of. The form looks worse than ever, but I do some things better than ever, too, to compensate. The biggest problem is I can't keep the posture throughout the swing because of my lower back pain, and the brace is weak, because the hip is dying of under-usage. Work to be done in the weight room and on the yoga matt...

Still, great discoveries were made and I will report on them soon.

I'm delighted to have noticed how the American ann I'm delighted to have noticed how the American announcers have conquered the seemingly impossible task of nailing the names of Finnish Disc Golfers almost perfectly. It's no easy task!

Still, here's a quick reminder of how to pronounce them approximately correctly:

Anttila (with TWO (2) T's and ONE (1) L) is pronounced like the antagonist of the 90's starlet Tila Tequila: Un-Tila.

Mäkelä: like MacElah, and the A's are pronounced like in LAND.

Laine: Lie-Neh.

Heinänen: Hey-Nah-Nen. Easy Peasy.

Hyytiäinen is too tricky to write out, sorry!

Every time I go the field I try something new. Tha Every time I go the field I try something new. That's what it is if you practice to teach. Today I tried something different with the arm at the hit, and while you can't see anything different here, it feels new and fast. The downside is, as a result, these throws were bordering on rounding. Also no wobble. This particular one was 507ft with a DD3 173G.

I tell you people, desk job + aging is no joke. Th I tell you people, desk job + aging is no joke. This year I've felt slower than ever and my body aching more than before. And it starts to show, too. My form ain't the same as 15 years ago, even if back then I wasn't a rubber man either. But it gets the job done, so far. I think I have a lot of mobility work ahead of me for this off season.

Regardless, here is me passing the unofficial exam for credible disc golf coaches by the United Brotherhood of Keyboard Warriors and Arm Chair Coaches.

Phew!

The unintentional air bounce is the worst... But o The unintentional air bounce is the worst... But once you know how to throw it on purpose, it can save you a few strokes every round. Especially on approach shots: it makes the speed control a lot easier, and since the disc fades with the rear end first, the ground play tends to be minimal. Comes in handy especially if you want to avoid unnecesessary skip on the C1, which typically are hard and dry.

What I really like is the almost 90 degree hyzers made possible only with the air bounce.

It takes some time to practice, but it's really worth it. Also, it makes you look like you learned to play in the early 2000's or before, because that's what we used to do. Kids these days don't.
